Terry Lee Stone has just released Managing the Design Process – Concept Development: An Essential Manual for the Working Designer. In it she looks at the point where theory meets practice in the design studio environment, examining design management concepts and methods in real-world applications. Stone seeks to uncover something typically not taught in design (or business) school: that which is actually learned on the job.

The AdamsMorioka designed text is described as “visually stunning,” featuring case studies to illustrate the fundamentals of design management. Managing the Design Process is being released in two volumes: the first is concentrated on Concept Development; whereas, the second looks at implementing design. Twenty-nine studios, including Chase Design Group, Ogilvy, Wieden + Kenedy, Imaginary Forces, and Collins, contributed insight and case stories to the book.
A few notable smashLAB projects, including work for Ascent Aerospace and Helicopters, Borealis Offsets, Northern BC Tourism, and The Sustainable Endowments Institute’s Green Report Card are featured in Managing the Design Process. smashLAB’s Design Can Change initiative is also illustrated and discussed in the handsome volume.
