Eric concentrates on helping groups communicate effectively through strategic design and brand strategy. He is a vocal proponent of pragmatic design and methodology on his blog ideasonideas, where he writes about design, brands, and experience. In 2007 he spearheaded Design Can Change to unite designers and address climate change—an effort recognized in TIME’s Design 100. Eric speaks regularly at industry events for groups including AIGA, SEGD, GDC, and Johnson & Johnson. He studied fine arts at the Emily Carr Institute and recently released his first book, Speak Human: Outmarket the Big Guys by Getting Personal.

As a founding partner and technical lead, Eric Shelkie oversees the planning and development of smashLAB projects. He’s a proponent of open-source technologies and has extensive hands-on experience in LAMP environments, as well as in the implementation and operation of server environments and website hosting. In addition to large-scale application development for groups like the Sustainable Endowments Institute, he has been directly involved in the creation of smashLAB’s own content management system (shiftCMS), open-source blog tool (MiniMU), and content communities (MakeFive, undrln). Most recently he has focused on the development of an ultra-light Twitter client (guuda).
